Design Research Seminar Project
Student name: Anirban Maiti
Guided by: Prof. Sugandh Malhotra

Objective

The key objective of this DRS project was to trace the difference in design education of design institutions in India and Germany.

The design schools considered for this project are:-

CountryInstitutions, City (Estd year)
IndiaNational Institute of Design, Ahmedabad (1961)
IDC School of Design, Mumbai (1969)
MIT Institute of Design, Pune (2006)
GermanyBauhaus Universitat, Weimer (1860)
Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule, Halle (1915)
Cologne International School of Design, Colgne (1991)

Process

The literature of all the institutes was collected from the respective websites. One document file (.txt) was generated separately for Indian and German design institutes. These text files contained information about the basic information of the institutes, introduction, curriculum and other information.

Various tests that were used for further analysis include: Frequency of words, POV, Co-occurance network of words, Multi-dimensional scaling plots and Cluster analysis.

Interesting observations were recorded in this dissertation that feature clear differentiation of focus in Indian and German design schools.
