Digging in hot, dusty, desert conditions create lots of mental plus physical stress. Many workers work overtime shifts on a long run trenching job. Loading artic in a quick run circuit or excavating frost locked clay in frigid temperatures does negative impact on excavator driver’s as well nearby worker’s health.
The cab is like an operator’s second home, so it better be comfortable. Everything within easy reach. A great seat. Climate air. Well placed controls. Expansive view. Quiet. Whatever it takes. The cab design should make user forget the conditions, so he can focus on the work. This project is an attempt to study the life of excavator operator and their surroundings, their needs and aspirations, problems they face and hence to design an interior for the EMV operators. To identify the needs of the driver, well planned user research was performed which involves user interviews, photo documentation of current excavators at selected locations, observational study and environmental study. To perform the user study construction site at Pune Metro and construction site at IIT Bombay were selected. The data was analyzed, and insights were drawn with the help of mapping and based on the research insights a design brief was drafted. Many problem-solving concepts were proposed and then evaluated based on the parameters of configuration, area of reach, ergonomics of operator and aesthetics. After analyzing the various
concepts, the final concept was taken ahead and then further developed. An inspiration was made to render the desired comfort, aesthetics and capture the feeling and emotions of the truck drivers. In the end 3D cad model was made to visualize the concept in 3D.
