Compact garbage trucks in the city of Delhi and other metro cities were a new initiative by the municipalities under the “Swacch Bharat Mission” drives. Compact tipper trucks were appointed to clean and clear out the urban narrow landscapes of the crowded cities. In 2016, SDMC took an initiative to eliminate Dhalaos (concrete structures meant for the collection of garbage from localities and markets) and place fixed compactors. It is estimated that the quantity of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) within in the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi would reach 17,000 – 25,000 MT per day (as per MCD) by 2021.
These newly built FCTS (fixed compactor transfer stations) utilises a fleet of compact garbage tipper trucks. These trucks can accommodate 2 personnel and carry a load of 0.5-1 ton. These tipper trucks
come in various configurations from open tipper trucks to closed tipper trucks and are being modified to
adapt to the general usage of both the operators and residents. Upon observation of this huge fleet and growing operations we can find various issues with these trucks that can be improved with redesigns based focused studies of the garbage disposal trucks, the garbage disposal system and its users.
